What is dental sedation?
Dental sedation is a pleasant and relaxing way to overcome your nerves and anxiety. The type we provide is intravenous sedation, often called IV sedation, where a sedative medication is administered into a vein to help you relax.
We use a sedative medicine, given by a small injection into a vein in the back of your hand or in the crease of your arm, which can help you fully relax for your procedure. The dose is tailored to each patient, and once it enters your bloodstream it takes effect quickly.
It works by helping you enter a state of deep relaxation so you can sit comfortably through your treatment without discomfort or worry. The tooth itself is also fully numb with local anaesthetic. IV sedation is not a general anaesthetic, so you are not asleep and your breathing stays normal throughout. Your safety is monitored for the whole session
Whilst you’re sedated you will still be conscious and will be able to talk to the dentist and nurses and they can chat back with you when needed. The majority of patients experience some amnesia and don’t remember much about the treatment at all!
If you are interested in taking that first step to visit a dentist after a long time or you wish to chat about sedation for treatment that you may be worried about, please call us on 01274 633 406 and we will happily book you in for a relaxed consultation.
